The ghosts of a deceased couple are haunted by an insufferable family that has moved into their home, and they hire a malevolent spirit to exorcise them. This is Michael Keaton’s favorite movie. Otho’s When they spray paint the walls in the house, they change the red elf’s shoes from the fire truck into white sneakers as he walks through the bathroom, then back into the red elf’s shoes as he walks into the next room. Adam: What are your qualifications? Beetlejuice: Ah. Well… I went to Juilliard… I graduated from Harvard Business School. I travel a lot. I lived through the Black Death and had a great time doing it. I’ve seen The Exorcist about ONE HUNDRED SIXTY SEVEN TIMES AND EVERY TIME IT’S FUNNIER… NOT TO SAY YOU’RE TALKING TO A DEAD NUMBER… WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT? Do you think I’m qualified? The Geffen logo is accompanied by a haunting version of the Banana Boat song (sung by the film’s composer, Danny Elfman). The plot of the film appeared with some added/alternate scenes. This version of the film is about 2 minutes shorter than the theatrical release, has some additional scenes and some others are missing, is in black and white, and has a time code at the bottom. This version has 4 main differences: Alternate scene: The scene when Adam tried to leave the house after he and his wife died is different. Instead of a desert, he sees an empty darkness filled with spinning gears. Additional Scenes: There is another scene where Lydia develops the pictures she took of Adam and Barbra. Then, after her mother lashes out at her and blames her for making holes in her sheets, Lydia runs upstairs and tries to convince her father that the pictures are real. There’s a lot more to the scene where the adults are looking for ghosts in the attic when we see a desert monster trying to eat Adam and Barbra while they’re hanging out of the attic window. Lastly, there is an extra 2 minute scene at the end where we see Lydia riding her bike home from school and her parents talking to Jane on the phone telling her they don’t want to sell the house. Lydia’s dance scene is shorter in this version and there is no scene with Bub in the waiting room. The film ends with a final shot of the exterior of the house. Cut to Terror Toons (2002). About ghosts and the dead, you can usually expect a horror movie full of screams and bloody figures. In Beetlejuice, however, they experiment with a new dimension of humor. Considering that the film was made in 1988 with limited special effects, Beetlejuice can simply be called “creativity at its best”. Tim Burton is a pure visionary. and with this film you have to appreciate his creativity and his ability to bring this film to the screen. The acting is outstanding in all fields. One cannot help but admire the promising young Winona Ryder – a flower ready to bloom. It would take several viewings to fully appreciate the film.
